Geothermal energy is emerging as a promising option to locally provide electricity and heat for remote northern communities in Canada. This partnership project aims at investigating the capital and operational costs associated with community-scale geothermal facilities considering the size of the communities, potential locations, and future prospects for geothermal technologies. We will particularly study the availability and service continuity of geothermal facilities by estimating the failure modes and failure likelihoods of their components and parts. In doing so, we aim at minimizing the cost and frequency of maintenance by reducing over-maintenance through prioritization of the components according to their impact on availability of geothermal facilities. The reliability, service continuity, and maintenance profile of geothermal facilities are of particular importance for remote communities in northern Canada with extreme weather conditions and lack of permanent means of transportation to major cities limiting their access to maintenance services.
