Biomass is well positioned to assume a major share of energy sources for heating purposes in northern Canada. This partnership project aims at improving the operational efficiency of biomass boilers and extending theirservice continuity by developing a benchmark availability-based maintenance plan in the context of northerncommunity applications. We estimate the reliability functions of a range of biomass boilers and theircomponents. In doing so, the cost and frequency of maintenance will be minimized by reducing overmaintenance through prioritization of the components according to their impact on availability of boilers. Thismethodology will improve the operational efficiency of biomass boilers and extend their service continuity bydeveloping an availability-based maintenance plan. This is reflecting the fact that the availability of heat andhot water during (long and severe) winter seasons in northern Canada is a critical operational requirement forbiomass boilers.
