Some of the earliest visions for virtual reality (VR) promised immersion in virtual worlds in ways that**participants could ultimately ignore their physical form, not using typical physical input to control their**experience. There is something alluring about this version of VR, promising a deeper immersive experience.**The use of our physical form in VR could be seen as lying on a spectrum. On one end there are VR experiences**that are completely passive, such as watching a movie in VR. At the other end of the spectrum, we have people**in full body suits on omni-directional platforms, using their entire body to navigate, explore and interact with a**virtual world. Much of today's research is focused on the far end of the spectrum, in which participants are**encouraged to engage in realistic physical experiences. While this is an exciting area of research, there are**opportunities to create other forms of virtual experience that are equally or more immersive, and that are**accessible to a wider range of participants (for example, people with limited mobility).**In this research project we will explore VR interaction modalities that require low physical and/or cognitive**effort (including gaze-based, passive haptic, and brain-computer interfaces), to establish directions for further**research in this space. We will do this by combining a review of prior work with a design-as-research**methodology involving iterative design and prototyping.
