We propose to investigate the changes in lignin properties during thermal processing with various additives,**focusing on the changes that occur during industrially-relevant polymer processing steps (e.g., extrusion, fibre**spinning, and blade coating of thin films), and understand how the factors of temperature, processing type and**processing additives can be used to optimize the properties of lignin-based materials. This work will be**primarily based around three experimental approaches:**1.Thermal treatment of various lignin formulations under oxidative environments and evaluation of changes in**lignin structure**2.Thermal analysis of specific lignins using compressive torsional DMA and tensile DMA to determine**changes in glass transition temperatures and storage modulus**3.In situ DMA tests to determine optimal temperatures and times to maximize mechanical properties including**ultimate tensile strength and elongation at break of lignin materials.**The technology and know-how generated through this project is expected to expand the utilization of the**Lignoforce lignin through the development of new lignin-based materials/technologies, leading to increase the**market demand for lignin. Additionally, the development of new IP around these materials/technologies will**allow BC Research Inc. to extend and leverage its Lignoforce technology package in the market.
