The goal of the proposed work is to develop a scalable system for the BioChoiceTM Lignin conversion intoadvanced aerogel and carbon aerogel materials. This research will provide a framework to develop novelmaterials for the green building and energy storage markets using renewable resources from the Canadianforest products industries. The work is an extension of an Engage and Engage Plus collaborative projects wherethe teams from Domtar and UBC worked to create several novel prototypes resulting in a patent application.Further discussions have led to the proposed work on creating scalable methods for lignin aerogel productionand hybrid aerogel materials. The project will result in creating capacity for Domtar to make value addedmaterials worth upwards to $15/kg. Further research is anticipated to result in novel pathways for utilization ofkraft lignin, which valorization of the material provides promise towards developing a robust bio-economy.
