The effects of environmental contaminants and stress on wild animals is currently determined by killing a sub-sample of the population which is destructive, particularly if those animals are threatened or endangered. Dr. Simmons will develop non-lethal, rapid, and cost-effective testing panels to assess the health of wild animals using a small blood sample, similar to the way the health of humans is assessed by testing blood for markers of disease and infection. These test panels will be shared through a database so that researchers, policy makers, industry, and non-for profits can download existing panels and upload their own.
