Improving the bioavailability of drugs and natural health products is a major hurdle in the nutraceutical industry. Despite the obvious health benefits, several candidate molecules are not pursued due to the inability of current delivery techniques to ensure their bioavailability, solubility and absorption. In particular, we are interested in controlling lactoferrin (a milk heme protein) release. Moreover, the industry is hindered by the community of users who want to avoid traditional matrices for releasing drugs (ie. polymers) for a more bio/natural material. Professor Unsworth has extensive and critical experience working with matrices composed of synthetic peptides from non-animal sources, as well as the controlled release of proteins. Thus, we are working together to develop a system to control the functional release of lactoferrin so as to develop a functional product.
