In collaboration with SGS, Fleming College's Centre for Advancement of Water and Wastewater Technologies (CAWT) will determine the heavy metal complexes formed during standard cyanide destruction and determine the best options for the removal of these heavy metal complexes. A silicon-manganese smelter roasts ores to produce a ferro-manganese product. The off-gasses from this process contain cyanide, zinc and iron which are removed from the gases using a scrubber system. This solution is then treated to remove cyanide as well as heavy metals to meet the environmental water discharge limits. The present system does not reduce the cyanide and heavy metals to the low concentrations required by new environmental standards. This proposal is for a cyanide and heavy metals trade-off study with a comparison of the conventional (sodium metabisulphite, ozone, hydrogen peroxide) and nonconventional unit operations (e.g. biogeneration, UV light), the results of which will be used to modify or construct a series of unit operations that will meet the discharge requirements.
