For this project, experts from Fleming College's Centre for Advancement in Mechatronics and IndustrialInternet of Things (CAMIIT) and Ontario Tech University's Department of Mechanical and ManufacturingEngineering will work with Horizon Aircraft to design, simulate and prototype the mechanisms of a novelwing-integrated electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) system. The academic partners will provideHorizon Aircraft with technical knowledge related to additive manufacturing, topology optimization, and the concepts of design for manufacturing and design for assembly. Advancements in these areas, which aretraditionally part of advanced manufacturing and machining, will accelerate Horizon Aircraft into the aerospaceindustry and will ultimately transform how a novel aircraft will be designed, tested, and manufactured. Theproposed research focuses on three areas: 1) detailed design of components and mechanisms for the system; 2) structural and fluid dynamics simulation and testing of the components and the system; and 3) design formanufacturing and design for assembly analysis. The outcome of this collaborative research work will stand as a premier example of integrating advanced manufacturing technologies with aerospace and eVTOL.
