英文摘要
Acanthus Research is developing new UV filters for use in cosmetic products. These nature-inspiredUV-protective compounds may eventually replace currently used chemicals that pose serious safety concerns for human health and the environment. This project involves investigation of the toxicity of several derivatives of gadusol and their effectiveness in protecting against harmful UV radiation and free-radical mediated skin photo-ageing. Acanthus does not currently have the expertise or facilities to do this research in-house.Collaborating with Professor Maryna Premyslova at Seneca's School of Biological Science Applied Chemistry will provide scientific data, which will enable Acanthus to make key decisions about their strategy for product formulation, development, and commercialization. The prevalence of skin cancer and the threat of photo-aging is driving growth in the global market for sun protection products, which is predicted to reach over $11.1billion this year. It is generally accepted that growth in the coming years will be driven by the development of more effective sun care and anti-aging active ingredients. Toxicity and efficacy data, together with the results of in-house stability studies and formulation development will put Acanthus in excellent position to seekadditional grants or partners for commercialization. This will lead to job creation and economic growth.
