Anaerobic digestion (AD) of municipal solid waste leads to conversion of the organic matter to methane, carbon dioxide, and other organic and inorganic compounds through complex cooperation among different microbial groups with different metabolic activities. The company, Bionetix Inc., among their broad range of products, seeks to develop a novel formulation of bacteria to expand its line of bioproducts for applications in the enhancement of methane production in anaerobic digesters. Thus, the project seeks to perform initial tests to evaluate the mixture of bacterial strains to enhance methane production during anaerobic digestion of municipal sewage sludge under different process conditions. The proposed project hence will result in an effective bacterial blend for the increased methane production and improving the overall AD process. This will lead to the development of strategic approaches for the AD of municipal sludge and similar residuals Canada-wide.
