Surface engineering processes are used to produce functional coatings. They require surface preparation steps to remove surface contaminants and impart physical anchoring points promoting coating mechanical adhesion to a substrate. VLN Advanced Technologies manufactures customized water jet devices for industry specific applications. To broaden its current market, VLN has recently explored the possibility of modifying its patented pulse water jet (PWJ) technology to enable its use as a green surface preparation method. While these studies have clearly demonstrated the potential of the technology, it has been deemed important by VLN to develop a robust fundamental knowledge of the process physics to allow designing and optimizing a commercially suitable PWJ system for surface preparation. This proposal aims to elucidate the process physics through modeling and experimental validation of the various process parts.
