Airborne Measurement Systems Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

SAIT is requesting NSERC support for a project with partners Canada's Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), ING Robotics, ITRES Research and Scentroid. The goal of the project is to develop, deploy and comparatively assess state of the art solutions comprising unmanned aerial vehicles, UAV- and ground-based instruments, and data interpretation to provide measurement, monitoring, interpretation and verification of GHG emissions from the tailings pond and mine face at an oil sands facility in Alberta. Success of this initiative would benefit Canada by demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship, encourage sustainable development of resources and may provide a basis for which both the Alberta and Federal Governments can set parameters and measurement practices for assessing GHG and VOC emissions from oil sands and pipelines in the longer term.
