The neutrino is one of nature's most abundant elementary particles. Neutrino interactions, an area of intense study, govern important phenomena such as stellar nuclear reactions or the decay of medical isotopes. I am leading the design of the Precision IceCube Next Generation Upgrade (PINGU), a new neutrino detector to be located in the IceCube Neutrino Observatory near South Pole Station Antarctica. PINGU builds on the success of DeepCore, a low-energy detector currently operating as a part of IceCube for which I was a lead designer. DeepCore is now reaching its full sensitivity and provides a new window for precision studies of neutrino oscillations and indirect searches for dark matter. Exploiting a very large sample of atmospheric neutrinos (approximately 50,000 per year), PINGU will provide a worlds first measurement of the neutrino mass hierarchy, ultimately identifying which neutrino is lightest. This novel Antarctic particle physics program augments the original design goals of IceCube, the worlds premier facility for studying high energy neutrinos.
