Neutrinos are second only to photons in abundance in the Universe, yet their underlying nature make these fundamental particles extremely elusive to detection. Even with many trillions of neutrinos passing through the human body every second one may never interact with a person in their lifetime. This property has made studying the neutrino very challenging with many of its primary properties, including absolute mass, still unknown. This same behavior also makes the neutrino an ideal messenger from astrophysical sources, carrying the information about its production to the Earth without being absorbed or directionally deflected.
