Additive Manufacturing (AM) refers to an emerging class of technologies that build 3D objects by the controlled addition of materials in a layer-by-layer fashion to produce objects at or near their final shape. This disruptive technology is foretasted to have a Canadian market for AM products reaching ~$14B/year by 2025, which will be significant in the aerospace industry, where a series of examples are emerging: commercially used GE LEAP fuel nozzle, Boeing optimized structural brackets, etc. Understanding how new chemistry can be processed by AM is a key challenge in the field. In that respect, Renishaw and Prof. Brochu are partners in different programs to push the technological barriers. In the current proposal, the team proposes to investigate fundamental aspects involved in AM processing, such as powder characterization, solidification and processing, and the development of residual stresses, to define processing envelops to open new AM materials, specifically high temperature Superalloys. Prof. Brochu will also augment his research portfolio by combining competitive but global interactions between the various inputs of AM. The dissemination of the research will contribute to improve Canada's position in adoption rate of AM technologies for all industries having Rensihaw as equipment supplier and Renishaw Canada as technology support. Moreover, this project will train six AM-literate HQPs, mandatory to adopt this disruptive technology.
