Life is controlled by molecules binding to each other. Their on/off states are controlled by subtle structural changes, even the addition of only a single carbon atom ('methyl'). Dr. Hof has studied how these mechanisms work, and has used those lessons to build an unprecedented set of chemical tools for studying methylation pathways in life. These include the first inhibitors of a protein that causes aggressive cancer, and a suite of tools that can sense, enrich, and disrupt the actions of their targets. His work opens the door for the creation of new diagnostics, therapeutics, and research reagents.
