英文摘要
Hypoxia is a central component of many diseases, including heart attack, ischemic stroke, and chronic lung diseases. Hypoxia is also common in nature and, not surprisingly, species have populated even the most hypoxic environments. Studying the cellular and systemic adaptations that enable animals to live in such niches offers unique insights into naturally evolved mechanisms that protect organisms against hypoxic or ischemic stresses. My research focus is the neurophysiological adaptations that protect hypoxia-tolerant brains. This work provides important insight into natural neuroprotective mechanisms against hypoxic stress, and may inform the development of novel treatments against hypoxic insults in brain.
