Dr. Edwards research focuses on processes that occur in the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic environments are prevalent in soils, sediments, hot springs, and inside the guts of most creatures. Engineered anaerobic environments include fermentation processes for food, chemicals or fuel production, bioremediation, and anaerobic digestion for biogas recovery from waste materials. Dr. Edwards research group studies microbial interactions, how these interactions enable greater activity in the whole than in the sum of the individual parts, and how knowledge about fundamental microbial processes can be used to develop sustainable practices and commercial processes to treat wastes and reduce energy consumption.
