Failures of critical components due to mechanical fatigue of material can cause
significant material and/or human losses (ex: flght SW 1380-2018; implant failures).
Insufficient fundamental knowledge prevents accurate service life prediction of
mechanical components under repeated loads. The proposed Canada Research Chair
specifically aims at understanding and quantifying the relationships between the
fatigue properties, the surface integrity and service environment which is currently
missing, as well as developing advanced testing and inspection methodologies required
to generate reliable data for theoretical and numerical modeling. Applications in
transportation (aircrafts and bridges), biomedical (implants) and energy production
(hydroelectric infrastructures) are anticipated.
