To help build Canadian water sustainability for the future, Dr. Kimura-Haras research integrates chemical and toxicological analysis to evaluate new engineering processes and their efficacy to produce safe waters from wastewater-impacted sources. Her Chair will focus on 1) elucidating the chemical formation mechanisms of drinking water disinfection byproducts (DBPs), 2) assessing the toxicity of individual DBPs and their mixtures using human cellular models, and 3) evaluating advanced engineering processes at a full-scale potable water reuse facility. Dr. Kimura-Haras research will establish a working knowledge on safe wastewater reuse needed to establish guidelines that address current and future water needs.
