Human activities result in contamination of water resources by multiple contaminants. Many of them are unregulated despite potential toxicity to the environment and human health. The proposed research program will investigate the fate and removal of selected contaminants, e.g., benzotriazole, a corrosion inhibitor; nitrochlorobenzenes, industrial chemicals; and microplastics. The main goal of the program is to improve water quality by using passive water treatment systems such as wetlands and bioretention cells. The fundamental knowledge resulting from this research will be used to inform the design and operation of passive treatment systems for the safe removal of the selected contaminants.
