Electrochemical energy storage (EES) is a key component in the drive for science devoted to sustainable energy, paramount in todays society. The widespread integration of renewable, intermittent energy sources is dependent upon EES to provide dispatchable power. The acceptance of electric vehicles hinges on developing safe, low-cost batteries. These opportunities address Canadas Climate Change Action and represent massive new-technology markets. The proposed program will enable pioneering advances in EES based on the materials (electro)chemistry that defines the performance of the batteries, and pave the way to breakthroughs vital to realizing the next generation of EES.
