This project aims to provide antimicrobial properties to specialty paper manufactured by Kruger for the food packaging sector. The approaches studied are the phosphorylation of cellulose fibre for grafting silver nanoparticles and the incorporation of bacteriophages (encapsulated or not) on the barrier of packaging paper. The challenge and originality of the project lies in the adaptation of knowledge and techniques to the constraints related to the specific processes of two Canadian pulp and paper plants and the specialty papers manufactured there. The project will create new, value-added products markets in an extremely competitive landscape, and help restore declining demand for products arising from pulp and paper manufacturing. The project will demonstrate that the Canadian pulp & paper industry can engage seriously in bioactive products and be profitable.
