Quantum Enhanced LIDAR

This project aims to utilize quantum correlations in obtained from non-classical sources of light to help enhance the performance of emerging generations of LIDAR systems. Target detection has long been known to benefit from various quantum effects in the optical regime. Many of the already developed protocols offer great promise, however most of them lack one or more feature, which are necessary for their field deployment in practical applications such as LIDAR. Lidar is a technology similar to radar that uses light instead of radio waves to gather information about the surrounding environment. It [plays a pivotal role in enabling autonomous vehicles. Lidar sensors are big, bulky and expensive. Moreover, their performance deteriorates significantly in conditions such as rain, snow, sleet, hail, smoke, and smog. In this project together with our industrial partner we plan to develop quantum enhanced LIDAR which can mitigate the limitations of the existing LIDAR systems.
