英文摘要
We will develop and test prototype semiconductor microchip quantum light sources to empower commercially-viable quantum optical technologies. Quantum technologies have numerous proven and beneficial capabilities for sensing, metrology, imaging, and security, but many of these have not entered the market yet largely due to the limitations of the commercially available quantum light sources. The sources we develop overcome these limitations by delivering a solution that is more compact, rugged, versatile, portable, scalable, widely tunable, and easier to use. These sources emit exotic states of light, different from conventional laser light, with properties desirable for low-light non-damaging biological imaging and high-resolution thin-film metrology. They are also essential building blocks for new quantum instrumentation being developed across the globe, and will allow such technologies to be more sophisticated and reliable than what is currently possible. Products for quantum encryption will also benefit from our technology. The form factor of our sources is similar to that of a semiconductor diode, and we expect this to rapidly stimulate applications beyond the initial markets. The outcome of this project will lead to the establishment of a competitive Ontario-based startup company that will employ highly-qualified personnel and will strengthen Canada's position as a leader in quantum technologies.
