Personal protection equipment (PPE) for the head can include examples like helmets and hard hats (headgear). Often, these headgear are tested in lab experiments to determine whether the headgear provides adequate protection to the human wearing them. These lab experiments can simulate impact to the head, bullet strikes, and blasts. Therefore, these lab methods are important in assessing headgear in all segments of society including the general population that works in industry or engages in sport, and the law enforcement and defense sectors that are exposed to bullets and explosions during their daily duties.
The research funded by this Alliance Grant focuses on advancing a realistic model of the human head that can be used in lab assessments of headgear.
Building upon a model of the human head developed for blast tests, that was originally developed by Defense Research and Development Canada, this research focuses on advancing the design of the model head for applications in blunt impact such that it reveals realistic assessment of military head PPE.
