The proposed research develops software which enables unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to perform autonomous flight in environments where GPS (Global Positioning System) is not available, such as rail tunnels, underground mines, building interiors, or flights close to infrastructure such as bridges. Example users of this technology include engineering services companies performing infrastructure inspection, underground mine operators testing air quality, and emergency services/first responders performing rescue missions inside collapsed buildings. The software will be developed, implemented, tuned and experimentally validated entirely in-house, creating the expertise required to quickly adapt the software to each client's unique requirements. The project is specifically positioned to lead to commercialization and additional benefits such as training highly qualified personnel and contributing to Alberta's emerging UAV industry.
