英文摘要
The research proposed continues successful research and development (R The application has three distinct research directions. One direction is related to optical modulators for use in optical networks. Another direction is related to the development of novel filters and filter-systems. Yet another direction is related to the development of compact, sub-wavelength-grating-based and sub-wavelength-grating-assisted, fundamental optical components for use in optical networks. All of the work proposed will be intended for use in optical systems and subsystems fabricated on SOI platforms. The objective of the work in the area modulators is to research novel modulator designs that increase operating speed, reduce on-chip real estate, lower power consumption, and control chirp, as compared to SOI modulators currently in use. The development of such modulators will facilitate the further development of, and significantly reduce the cost of, future optical interconnects and telecommunication systems. The modulators to be investigated will use the "plasma-dispersion" effect in silicon pn junctions. Ultra-low power, free-spectral-range-free (FSR-free), low-chirp, micro-ring resonator-based (MRR-based) modulators will be investigated as will ultra-low chirp, push-pull, FSR-free, MRR-based interferometric modulators and ultra-low chirp, push-pull polarization modulators. The objective of the work in the area of novel filter designs is targeted at datacom and/or telecom applications. These filters will use MRRs, gratings, contra-directional couplers, and combinations of resonators, gratings, and/or contra-directional couplers. These will be compact MRR-based filters with bent contra-directional couplers having suppressed free-spectral-ranges and large adjacent side-mode-suppression-ratios at both the through and the drop ports. Other filters that will be investigated and further developed are ultra-compact, apodized, series-stacked, contra-directional-coupler-based filters for course wavelength division multiplexing applications. The objective of the work into the development of compact, SWG-based and SWG-assisted optical components for use in optical networks will focus on fundamental components such as mode-evolution-based couplers, tunable couplers, polarization rotators, polarization combiners, polarization splitters, polarization splitter-rotators, polarization rotator-combiners, tunable polarization converters, polarization rotating filters, polarization independent devices, resonators, etc. This work is significant in that such devices should offer greater performance uniformity for standard, commercially available, fabrication processes. This proposal is aimed at ensuring that Canada remains at the forefront of the design and development of components for commercially available SOI platforms and, therefore, at the cutting edge of photonics related R&D in general.
