The main objective of the proposed research is to develop a simulation method in which a physical model of a high-rise building or a bridge deck is tested in a wind tunnel testing facility while some of dynamic properties of the real structure, such as mass and energy dissipation mechanism, are modelled in a computer. The physical and the numerical models interact with each other in real time through feedback from sensors and actuation of linear electric motors. This project is an expansion of an earlier hybrid wind simulation project where the control strategy will be enhanced to include control of two degrees of freedom and to minimize the delay in the actuators' responses. The development of the hybrid wind simulation method is expected to simplify preparation and calibration of physical models required for aeroelastic wind tunnel tests. The research project is aimed at substantially reducing the testing cost, such as machine time and engineering time, required for aeroelastic wind tunnel test. The development will also lead to better understanding on interaction between wind-induced load and dynamic response of an elastic structure. Through the project, HQPs with diverse ethnic background will develop technical skills in various subject areas and will also be trained in equity, diversity, and inclusion.
