Large industrial machines and systems are subjected to significant stresses and temperature variations in manyfields of activity. The project seeks to develop optical fiber sensors to monitor the temperature and structuralhealth of such machinery in order to ensure their safe operation and to monitor their maintenance schedule. Inmany of those applications, conventional electrical sensors are not suitable due to the interference from highelectric fields or hazardous conditions generated by the machines to be monitored. The sensors will be small,economical, and yet durable for the intended use over long periods of time.
