Personal injury from head trauma is a frequent occurrence in many sectors of activity, including theconstruction industry, emergency response teams, security forces, as well as many sports at all levels. Thisproject aims at the development of a sensor system designed to evaluate the performance of protectiveequipment against shocks and impacts and as a result to improve their efficiency. The sensor array willmeasure how much of the impact gets transferred across the protective equipment over multiple points andallow engineers and biomedical scientists to calculate residual forces reaching the body. Our industrial partnerin the project has already successfully commercialized products for this purpose but they are interested inevaluating a fiber optic solution that would be smaller and lighter, that would allow for more simultaneoussensor points and higher detection speed, and at the same time potentially less expensive.
