DMT Bioproducts Inc.'s goal is to develop commercially viable bioprocessing technology to efficiently separate and process components of locally grown biomass and convert them to fuel derivatives and other valuable materials. Located in Alymer, Ontario, DMT is powered by nature and dedicated to ensuring the developed processes are as green as possible. Currently, DMT is in the process of developing a commercially viable technology to produce furfural from biomass Miscanthus Giganteus grass crop. Miscanthus is a rapidly growing plant that can provide up to 7 times the biomass as corn per acre and can grow in poor soil as well as in short seasons.Lambton College and DMT have previously collaborated to develop and optimize procedures to convert miscanthus grass into a high purity furfural product. Based on the successful results, DMT and Lambton College's Bioindustrial Process Research Centre (BPRC) are extending their collaboration to build off the previous project to design, build, and commission a pilot plant for the bio-refining process for furfural production from Miscanthus. Specifically, the team will focus on introducing process control and automation to the pilot plant and optimizing the production of furfural. The success of this ongoing collaboration will lead to the establishment of an optimized furfural production facility in Ontario. This will allow DMT and Canada to enter the growing furfural market and advance bioprocessing technology, adding considerable growth and diversity to Ontario's bio-industrial and agricultural sectors. While also creating a competitive advantage locally in Sarnia Lambton and across Canada. Furthermore, the successful development of a pilot plant would generate additional annual revenue of $350,000 and create up to 12 new long-term positions at DMT.
