Coastal regions support high socio-economic and environmental value and are underthreat from human activities. This research program will lead collaborative national and international studies on the chemical, biological and social connectivity of coastal ecosystems, primarily in Arctic and Atlantic Canada. It will use innovative empirical research, social science and local knowledge (including First Nations) to develop new insights on three objectives: 1) determining how migratory animals move nutrients and contaminants along and across coastlines; 2) delineating key coastal habitats for biodiversity and management; and 3) evaluating current and historical effects of human activities on coastal habitats.
