As of 2020, almost 30 kilotonnes of black carbon were emitted in Canada, with transportation and heavy mobile equipment representing the largest source of black carbon emission. Filtration of carbon soot from the engine oil is traditionally very difficult and uneconomical. With Canada committed to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40-45% from 2005 levels by 2030 and to ensure that the black carbon removal process can be achieved efficiently with minimal environmental impact, it is essential to shift towards green power solutions for processing black carbon soot removal. Photovoltaic (PV) energy provides an attractive alternative green power source. Supported by OMTEC Inc, the objective of the proposed research project is to develop a highly power efficient PV energy conversion scheme for use in microwave heating technology for eliminating carbon soot in diesel engines automobiles' used engine oil. To be specific, this research project will: (1) develop a cost-effective single-stage PV maximum power point tracker with high voltage gain capability for interfacing with the magnetron for use as the microwave energy source, (2) investigate the optimal amount of microwave heat energy for effective carbon soot removal, (3) develop an energy management control scheme to maximize the PV-to-microwave energy conversion rate for a wide range of PV irradiation levels, and (4) develop and test proof-of-concept hardware power electronic prototypes in a real microwave energy generation environment. As the proposed project focuses on the development of a clean carbon soot removal process, the development and adoption of more efficient and clean diesel powered automobiles will reduce GHG significantly and result in health benefits to Canadians.
