Past work: Over the past 25 years, the applicant's research has focused on inclusive media and design for people with disabilities (PWDs) and older adults (OAs). During that time, over 150 journal and conference manuscripts and book chapters were published, three patents awarded, five start-ups initiated, and research findings translated into everyday practices. Goal: The long term goal of the proposed research is to study and build computer-based tools that help people create more accessible digital media for PWDs and OAs. This media includes video, audio, tactile and communication systems. Using digital media, data analytics techniques and artificial intelligence we will explore and develop access to and evaluation of entertainment, such as television and film. We will also analyse the use of person-generated narratives so that the individual's "voice" can be added into various systems and processes where the person is invested and engaged. This can lead to digital media resource use that meet and augment people's needs, abilities and goals. Methodology: Methodologies that will be employed include: needs analysis methods such as focus groups; iterative user-centred design using co-design methods; and formative and summative user testing. Quantitative metrics include usability metrics, validated instruments for measuring technology acceptance, health variables and eye movement data. Qualitative data such as verbal or signed thoughts and opinions, responses to surveys, and facial expressions will also be used. All methods must be accessible to PWDs and OAs. Because there are small numbers of possible PWDs and OAs to participate in studies, small-n statistical methods are used to analyse quantitative data. Thematic analysis is used for qualitative data analysis. HQP and EDI: Highly qualified personnel (HQP) recruited from different science-oriented disciplines such as Engineering will work with artists and social scientists to realise research goals. Students will learn about various design and evaluation methodologies as well as gain new perspectives on issues. All HQP gain knowledge and experience in inclusive design and evaluation methods, and applicable regulations or standards. HQP have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and data analysis tools. NSERC's equity, diversity and inclusion mandate is directly embodied at the IMDC. We also actively recruit and train students with disabilities. Contribution: The contribution of this research is that new technological innovations and models of inclusive interaction are being created and disseminated in scientific venues. Also, this research is being used to inform government policy, standards and commercial product development so that technologies are more accessible by design. Finally, business and users are involved to find innovative ways of applying our research results in a business or community setting with benefits for as many different types of users as possible.
