The proposed research will develop expertise in testing of graphene oxide membranes for isotopic filtration of water. The long term goal is to develop a system capable of reliably filtering tritium from heavy water. A computational modelling study will support the research, with the goal of determining the underlying mechanism for the filtration and hence guide a process of optimisation of the membrane through functional additions. Different membrane types will be assessed and optimised, and in addition an approach to scaling up from the lab to a pilot plant outlined.Eventually, nuclear reactors must be decommissioned. The key outcome of this research will be the efficient separation of tritiated water from the decommissioned heavy water moderator. Efficient filtration has the potential to make safe storage much easier, and in addition to i) provide separated tritium and heavy water for subsequent sale; ii) position Canada well to lead the global marketplace for decommissioning of reactors that will be emerging internationally over the next few decades. HQP will gain experience in advanced filtration techniques that are also applicable to, e.g. desalination of water.
