We propose a systematic program to discover and validate new quantum materials with desirable properties for applications in quantum computing, quantum sensing, energy storage/transmission and communication. Our approach is to employ density functional theory (DFT) methods to design previously unknown or unappreciated materials with physical properties (structure, band structure, magnetism & superconductivity) of interest. We will synthesize these materials and validate their physical properties with a broad range of cutting-edge techniques, in-house at McMaster University, at large international user facilities (for experiments with muons and neutrons) and at the laboratory of our international collaborator (angle-resolved photoelectronspectroscopy). This proposal will build on our existing expertise in quantum materials discovery and Canadian investments in advanced characterization, strengthening Canada's position as a global leader in quantum materials. Ultimately, this work will lead to the development of new quantum materials which will enable technologies with applications in computation, energy and healthcare.
