Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in thin-walled lightweight structures using guided ultrasonic waves (GUW) is the subject of intensive international research. After the detection of damage with lamb waves in isotropic, homogeneous materials such as aluminium was first investigated and published in numerous publications, international groups of researchers addressed wave propagation and wave interaction with damage in anisotropic but still homogeneous materials trough thickness such as fibre composites. A broad published knowledge base also exists in this field. However, the wave propagation in laminates of anisotropic materials and strong inhomogeneity in the thickness direction of thin-walled components is completely unexplored and unexplained. Fibre-metal laminates are a typical representative of this class of materials. The aim of the Research Unit FOR3022 is to gain a profound understanding of an integrated Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in Fibre Metal Laminates (FML) using guided ultrasonic waves (GUW) over the next 6 years. This requires an integral view on the physical phenomena of wave propagation even under complex environmental conditions, their interaction with hidden damage, recording of these interactions using micro-technical sensors at the location of event, and a signal processing for full damage diagnostics. The findings will be useful for the consideration and comprehensive understanding of wave propagation in all layered material systems made from components of large impedance differences.
