This project will explore the notion of 'repurposed' poetics, whereby writing is recycled - both textually and materially - to think more dynamically about the climate crisis. It will identify how such practices can create texts that mimic and highlight environmental change as it unfolds. My PhD research will ask: how might more realistic forms of writing construct their very own form of speculative thinking? It will explore how non-science fiction literature (specifically, poetry) can be recycled and remediated - producing texts that are uniquely attuned to our ever-changing climate. I will argue that this original stylism affords a political response to climate change that is more dynamic and ethical. My project will develop its theoretical framework, investigating shells, stones, ice and poems as living archives that correspond to their environments. I will argue for viewing poetry as living, dynamic forms that can react to changes of ecology and of culture, and ask how recycled writing might mimic or experience a similar kind of lifespan? I will focus principally on contemporary poetry from US contexts (Kaia Sands, Brenda Shaughnessy, Juliana Spahr, Ben Lerner, Claudia Rankine, Craig Santos Perez, dg nanouk okpik), informed by wider post-colonial writing, such as that by Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner and Aka Niviâna. The scope of my study will be integral in thinking through the ethics of such recycled writing, and the unequal suffering of climate change tied inextricably to colonialism My research takes its cue from Kathryn Yusoff's reworking of the term 'archive' (as living records of the histories of environmental change), and I will go on to ask how recycled writing might mimic or experience a similar kind of lifespan? Inspired by recent studies of ice libraries and humans-as-climate-archives, my project will transpose this sound theoretical basis to an original study of contemporary literary stylistics and the environment. It will further identify how literature might help us think-with our climate crisis, eliciting its global inequalities to shape a more effective social response
