Knowledge Networks: A Transnational Approach to Allied Coalition Dynamics in the Great War

Britain's role in the exchange of technical military knowledge with allies is at the forefront of publicdiscussion. Recent headlines regarding Britain's supply of tanks to Ukraine, as well as the trilateralsecurity pact between the UK, USA, and Australia - nicknamed AUKUS - has brought Britain's position inallied dynamics into question. Such discussions have historical foundations, which is the central point Iwill discuss in my thesis. Military knowledge and information has always held value to nations, but lessfrequently discussed is to what extent and purpose this valuable knowledge was shared among allies.With recent global events, discussion surrounding transnational knowledge exchange has reignited, andnow many see Britain as a follower rather than a leader. What my thesis will show is that such a positionwas true of Britain even 100 years ago, when they lost the lead in terms of technical military knowledgeand influence in comparison to their allies in the Great War.
