This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. A study to find interventions that are designed to reduce perceived stress and increase coping effectiveness in patients with HIV disease. A growing body of research with persons having HIV disease, as well as those with other chronic and potentially fatal illnesses such as cancer, indicates that a variety of biobehavioral strategies for stress management cannot only mitigate psychological distress and improve coping skills, but can also enhance immune function through neuroendocrine-immune system modulation. Such intervention strategies thus have considerable potential for lessening the amount of psychological and physical symptoms, thereby improving the quality of life of persons with HIV disease. While there is compelling evidence for neuroendocrine and behavioral interactions, especially stress effects with the immune system, the influences of these interactions on health outcomes is only beginning to be examined. Chronic and/or severe psychological stress associated with living with HIV disease may further compromise immune functioning over the illness progression, thereby increasing risks for morbidity and mortality. The three stress management interventions used by this study group are "positive living" (LIVE), Tai Chi (TCHI), and spiritual growth groups (SPRT). The aim is to determine if these three short-term interventions along with booster strategies will improve overall conditions for the patients. After strategies are used, data will be collected at the ten week mark, six months later, and twelve months later. Blood samples will be taken and patients will bring in saliva samples.
