MRI/MRS INVESTIGATION OF YOUNG OFFSPRING OF BIPOLAR DISORDER PATIENTS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will examine the neurobiology of bipolar disorder by investigating possible brain abnormalities that could be present in young bipolar offspring of bipolar patients who are at high risk for developing bipolar disorder. The investigators will obtain 3D MRI scans and MRS scans to measure brain NAA and myo-inositol levels. The protocol is designed to enroll and scan 20 bipolar offspring who have no psychiatric disorder (unaffected bipolar offspring), 20 bipolar offspring with bipolar disorder (affected bipolar offspring with bipolar disorder), 20 bipolar offspring unaffected with bipolar disorder but affected with other psychiatric disorders (unaffected bipolar offspring with other psychiatric disorders), and 20 healthy controls with no familial history of psychiatric disorders. Subjects will have a MRI/MRS scan (1 hr), neuropsychological testing, and routine labs (CBC, liver function tests, electrolytes, kidney function tests, thyroid function test, blood chemistry, cortisol blood level, urinalysis, urine pregnancy test, and urine drug screen) to rule out medical problems, pregnancy, and drug use.
