Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has gained acceptance among practitioners in the area of fluid mechanics as an accepted modeling methodology to predict the transport of fluids and constituents within the fluid. The use of ultraviolet (UV) light for water treatment has gained substantial growth in usage for the disinfection of water and wastewater, and is showing growing promise as a technology of choice for the treatment of organic contaminants through advanced oxidation processes (AOP). While a number of academic centres have specialized in advancing the science of UV disinfection and AOP from an experimental framework, none has developed an expertise dedicated to the modeling of UV systems. My aim is to establish a premier academic research program specializing in UV systems modeling through the use of CFD. In the past, CFD models developed under my leadership helped to explain a number of UV reactor phenomena, which have been used to develop effective regulations and guidelines within the water and wastewater treatment industry. The nonlinear dynamics at play in UV disinfection and AOP are still not well understood, and numerical modeling provides a key ingredient to help enhance the knowledge of system performance - the end benefit being more efficient systems, improved online control and ultimately improved protection of the environment and public health.CFD is computationally expensive, both in terms of processing time and memory requirements. A powerful centralized workstation computer will enable students / researches working under my leadership to run sophisticated models in a timely and efficient manner, with easy remote access through the internet. FLUENT CFD software academic licenses have the capacity for 4 concurrent users and parallel processing capacity of up to 8 processors. Only a powerful centralized workstation computer would be able to take full advantage of the software capabilities. Furthermore, a centralized platform for CFD is more cost effective, compared to the use of individual PCs, when three or more users are utilizing the system.
