We request a superconducting magnet system and a helium leak detector to support our long term objectives of understanding the interplays of structure and electronic degrees of freedom in nano/mesoscopic systems. The research program to be supported is described in details in the NSERC-Discovery "Interplays of structure and electronics in mesoscopic systems". We will use these equipments in magnetotransport studies of mesoscopic sytems such as graphene (monolayer of graphite) structures, carbon nanotubes, and metallic and semiconducting self-assembled materials. The large magnetic field that the magnet can achieve (14 Tesla), and the leak detector's capability to monitor the vacuum in our low-temperature cryostat are necessary to study a large number of correlated electronic states in mesoscopic systems, such as the quantum Hall effects, localization effects and the Kondo effect. Here, we briefly discuss two sets of short term objectives where these equipments will be used: studies of the quantum Hall states in strained graphene and in graphene/insulator/graphene bilayers.
