Plant physiological processes are highly dynamic and can vary over space and time as plants respond to changing environmental conditions. One key way to monitor the responses of plants to these stresses is using remote sensing devices. In this RTI proposal we request funds to build AMSPEC instruments which allow automated continuous narrow waveband observations to be acquired in a multi-angular fashion. The system also includes a webcam to link these measurements to phenological changes in the canopy thereby allowing comprehensive data collection year round. We propose locating these instruments at a range of critically important Canadian vegetation types, where detailed carbon exchange measurements are underway. A successful proposal will allow us to obtain data to integrate our knowledge from tree physiology, remote sensing, forestry, and biometrics and better predict the impact of canopy structure on tree physiological responses to climate and environmental change. Ultimately this research will improve the accuracy and precision of national and global scale forest carbon accumulation models.
