Eye movements and visual cognition

The proposed research extends my previously funded investigations over the past 20 years, which are broadly based on utilizing eye movement monitoring to study a variety of topics related to visual cognition including the study of expertise (e.g., chess, reading), problem solving (e.g., chess, anagrams), visual attention, visual decision making, scene processing, and the nature of memory representations. The anticipated main focus of my research during the next granting period would be to further explore domain related visual expertise that is demonstrated by chess masters. Specifically, one of the most fascinating and impressive aspects of skilled performance is the ability of the experienced eye to encode at a glance the essence of briefly presented stimulus material. The proposed research utilizes eye movement monitoring paradigms in the context of several inter-related research programs to study human expertise in the domains of chess. The projects proposed would extend my previous research demonstrating the superior perceptual encoding of chess-related material by chess experts versus novices.
