Mixed-media game framework for interactive distributed experience

The proposed research investigates a mixed-media (physical and virtual) framework fro a distributed interactive educational experience targeted at the Inuit youth in northern communities. It is in partnership with Karman Interactive and Inuit Communications, and is an initial research phase for a future development project. The research aims at studying and designing potential game structures that allow virtual and physical components to be combined in a way that (1) matches the technological infrastructure (existing and planned), (2) encourages community connection while providing educational and entertaining content, and (3) allows the use of user-created content to promote exposure to multimedia skills and complement training programs considered by ICSL. The research will make use of game structures such as Alternate Reality and Situated Games, while investigating a framework using social media which is increasingly popular among target audience.
