Solegear bioplastics is a leading developer of high-performance plant-based plastics. Solegear has developed proprietary bio-based and compostable bioplastic formulations for rigid packaging, based on poly(lactic acid) PLA, a renewable-resource based aliphatic polyester. To meet the need of a material capable of resisting elevated environmental temperature, thus resisting deformations during storage and shipping in warm climates, this collaborative project between Queen's University and Solegear aims at formulating a material with high biobased content and compostability, which at the same time meets the heat resistance requirements, at a similar price range to current incumbent conventional plastics packaging.
