Ensuring a reliable, efficient energy supply through the provision to the market of of heavy duty gas turbines, aero derivative gas turbines and industrial gas turbines is the aim of Siemens Canada Limited (Power Generation , Distributed Generation, Aeroderivative Gas turbine). The next generation of engines will need to comply with increasingly stringent pollutant emissions legislation not only for high methane natural gas but also for a wide range of fuel compositions encompassing higher hydrocarbons and inert gases. The capability to operate on liquid fuel either for emergency backup of for full baseload operation is also mandatory for many applications. These requirements impose significant technical and modeling challenges for the combustion system development. This project aims to enhance our ability to develop clean combustion technology. Improvements in pollutant emissions requires improved mixing to ensure a more complete combustion of the fuel and air mixture. Effective mixing of the fuel with air has the potential for reducing NOx emissions, yet current understanding of the mixing process is incomplete and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling is not yet able to model the complete physical process. The aim of the project is to study a simplified model of the mixing chamber to improve understanding of the physical mixing processes and improve understanding of the limitations in the current CFD models of the mixing processes.
